- Infectious diseases are categorized as public or community hlth problems
- Bc of their potential to spread & cause community-wide or worldwide emergencies, infectious diseases require organized, public efforts for their prevention & control

Public Hlth Control of Infectious Diseases
A
- Public efforts are under the jurisdiction of official public hlth agencies at local, state, national, & international lvls
- In areas of hlht w/in a state, state laws usually prevail over federal law
- The CDC in the national public hlth entity responsible for infectious disease control across the states

Primary Intervention
A
- Measures to prevent trasnmission of an infectious agent and to prevent pathology in the person exposed to an infection
- EX: breaking chain of transmission, immunization, changing the behaviors tht led to exposure or pathogen

Secondary Prevention
A
- Consists of activites to detect infections early & effective treat persons who are infected
- Prevents progression of disease & transmission of pathogens to others
- EX:
> reporting infectious diseases
> investigating contacts
> notifying partners
> finding new cases
> isolating infected ppl

Tertiary Prevention
A
- Includes activities involved in caring for persons w/ an infectious disease to ensure tht they are cured or tht their quality of life is maintained
- EX:
> education to ensure pts adhere to drug regimen
> education on protection measures for those caring for an infected individual
