Natural Immunity Flashcards
What are Antibiotics?
Produced by microbes to compete with other microbes
What are Antibodies?
Produced by immune system to attack foreign objects and make them more “visible”for destruction to phagocyte cells
What are Cytokines?
cause swelling, redness, and local heating
What are Chemokines?
Attract Neutrophils
What are Major Histocompatibility Complexes?
Antigen presenting molecules produced in phagocytes, infected host cells, or B cells. Present pathogens that trigger responses to the rest of the immune system.
What are T Cell Receptors?
Membrane spanning proteins on T cells that recognize and bind protein antigens attached to MHCs
What is an Antigen?
Molecule on the outer surface of an organism/cell
What are the 3 Functions of Antibodies?
- Tag foreign cells so phagocytes can more easily recognize and destroy. 2. Neutralize effects of pathogens though binding. 3. Aggregate together so they can be found easier
What is the Complement System?
Proteins and Antibodies working together. Phagocytosis is enhanced by proteins binding to antigen-antibody complexes. Also form pores in membrane of invaded cell that lead to cell death
What is Immediate Hypersensitivity?
Overstimulation of IgE antibody production, over-release of histamines, allergic reaction
What are Autoimmune Diseases?
When the immune system makes particles that mistake host cells for foreign cells and try to destroy it
