Evolution Systematics Flashcards
What are the two Origin of Life Hypotheses?
- Subsurface hypothesis. 2. Surface Hypothesis
What is the Subsurface Hypothesis?
Cells originated at Thermal Springs on Ocean Floor where conditions were less hostile than the Earth’s Surface.
What is the Surface Hypothesis?
Cells arose out of a “primordial soup” that was exposed to gamma radiation, electric strikes and UV radiation. May have made building blocks of life, but environment too harsh to sustain life.
How are Bacterial Species defined?
“a collection of isolated strains sharing a high degree of overall similarity in several independent traits, compared to other related groups of strains”
Are Bacterial Species reproductively isolated?
No, genetic information can be exchanged between organisms of same species and of different species
How much DNA is shared between organisms of the same “species”?
70% or Greater
How much 16sRNA is shared between organisms of the same “species”?
97% or Greater
