Natural Hazards 🩵 Flashcards
What is the crust?
A hard outer shell of the Earth
What is the mantle made of?
Semi-molten rock
What is the outer core made of?
Liquid iron and nickel
What is the inner core made of?
also made of iron and nickel but is very hot (5500 degrees)
Describe the moment of convection currents
Heat is generated in the Earths core by radioactive decay, this causes heated rock from the mantle to begin to rise, this semi molten rock spreads out carrying the plate, this magma then cools and sinks down to be reheated.
What is a constructive plate boundary?
Plates move away from each other
What is a destructive plate boundary?
Two plates move towards each other, causing the oceanic plate to subduct under the continental plate
What is a conservative plate boundary?
Two plates slide against each other or is the same direction
How are volcanoes caused at constructive plate boundaries?
When the two plates move away from each other is forms a gap, allowing magma to seep through and cool to form volcanoes
How are earthquakes caused at destructive plate boundaries?
The friction from the oceanic plate sub-ducting under the continental plate causes lots of friction and therefore earthquakes
How are volcanoes caused at destructive plate boundaries?
As the oceanic plate sub-ducts under the continental plate, it melts and forms magma, this magma then rises causing composite volcanoes
How are fold mountains created at destructive plate boundaries?
The plates moving towards each other can cause the oceanic plate to smash into the continental plate and push upwards, forming fold mountains
How are earthquakes caused at conservative plate boundaries?
The two plates moving against each other causes lots of friction and therefore earthquakes
What are geological hazards?
Created by the movement of earths tectonic plates
What are two examples of geological hazards?
Earthquakes and volcanoes
