Ecosystems 🧡 Flashcards
what is an ecosystem?
A community of plants and animals which interact with each other and their non living environment
What does biotic and abiotic mean and what are some examples?
Biotic- living
.animals- mammals, insects birds fish
.plants- trees, shrubs, grasses
.Bacteria and fungi
Abiotic- non-living
.Air- oxygen and carbon dioxide
.sunlight- for photosynthesis
.water- for plant growth
.minerals- rocks and soil
What is nutrient cycling?
When organic matter dies, decomposers (bacteria and fungi) rot them down and release the nutrients back to the soil to be taken up by plant roots to enable growth
What are producers?
(Plants) uses sunlight energy to produce food
What are consumers?
.Get its energy by eating other organisms. They can wat producers (eg rabbits eat grass) or other consumers (eg foxes eat rabbits)
.there are primary, secondary, and tertiary consumers
What are decomposers?
.An organism that gets its energy by breaking down dead material (eg dead producers, fallen leaves) and dead consumers (eg animal remains)
.Bacteria and Fungi are decomposers
What are herbivores?
Only eat plants
What are carnivores?
Only eat meat
What are top carnivores?
Have no enemies/predators (tiger, polar bear, lion etc)
What are omnivores?
Eat both plants and animals
What is a food chain?
Shows what eats what
What is a food web?
Lots of food chains and how they overlap
