When was NATO formed?
1st of April 1949 in Washington D.C. originally formed of 12 European and North American members.
Why was NATO formed?
NATO was formed to safeguard the freedom and security of its member states from the rising threat of the Soviet Union by political and military means. Article 5 states an attack on any member is an attack on all and necessary action will be taken against the threat whether political or military.
How many members does it have today?
NATO has 31 members today and is constantly growing with Finland joining exactly 74 years after its formation. Sweden is next to join with its application approved.
What are the two official languages?
English and French, NATO known as OTAN in French.
What does NATO do today?
Even though the Cold War ended in 1991 and the Soviet Union dissolved in 1992 NATO has a very prevalent role today. Since 9/11 NATO has been involved in preventing International terrorism in the Mediterranean sea. NATO has also deployed 3700 partner troops to Kosovo to help halt the humanitarian disaster and widespread violence. Currently the RAF has 140 EAW and 9 bomber sqn deployed to Amari Airbase in NATO Operation Azatize to protect the airspace by intercepting Russian Aircraft
