What is the National Decision Model used for?
The NDM provides a rationale for officers to explain the choices they made and the rationale behind them, and enables supervisors and colleagues to review actions and create opportunities for development.
The NDM can be used in any decision-making process by individuals or teams at any level. It can be used in both planned and extemporaneous circumstances as well as operational and non-operational incidents.
What is THRIVE+ used for?
THRIVE+ is a set of principles and framework to assess the type of policing response or investigation required for a particular set of circumstances. It aligns with the ‘Assessment’ stage of CIAPOAR and focusses on the assessment of specific threats, the risk of harm and the potential for benefits.
Why is it important that decision making is recorded?
You are responsible for your decisions and must be prepared to provide a rationale for what you did and why.
Sometimes you will be required by law or policy to record the decisions you made and the actions you took and at other times it is at your discretion.
Remember, incidents involving harm or risk of harm to any person should always be recorded.
