MOA
Act at specific opioid receptor sites in CNS
Produce analgesia, sedation, and sense of well-being (euphoria)
Indications
Relief of severe acute or chronic pain
Analgesia during anesthesia
Labor
Contraindications
Allergy
Diarrhea caused by poisons (ADE is usually constipation)
Caution
◦ Respiratory dysfunction
◦ Pregnancy, labor, lactation
◦ GI or GU surgery
◦ Acute abdomen or ulcerative colitis
◦ Head injuries, alcoholism, delirium tremens, CVA (stroke due to CNS effect)
◦ Liver or renal dysfunction (risk of toxicity)
Drug-to-Drug Interactions
Barbiturate general anesthetics
Phenothiazines (risk for respiratory depression)
MAOIs (increased risk for serotonin syndrome)
Adverse Effects
Respiratory depression with apnea (most common)
Cardiac arrest
Shock
Orthostatic hypotension
Nausea, Vomiting,
Constipation
Dizziness
