Nanotechnolgy Flashcards
What is a metal displacement reaction?
They are simple redox reactions that involve only the transfer of electrons from one metal atom to another.
What is the best condition for a chemical reaction to occur?
They generally need additional energy to take place in a reaction so when they are heated is best.
What is an empirical formula?
A formula giving the proportion of elements in a compound.
What is an addition polymer?
A polymer formed by molecules adding together without the loss of any atoms.
How does increasing temperature increase the rate of a reaction?
It increases the energy of a particle making it more likely to collide with other particles to make a product.
How does a fractionating tower work?
Particles of catalyst are mixed with hydrocarbon fraction at high temperatures then the cracked vapors containing smaller molecules are separated by distillation.
What is catalytic cracking?
Changing long chain hydrocarbons into smaller more useful ones.
Which polymers are recyclable?
Thermoplastic polymers
Thermosetting polymers
What are Monomers?
They are the small units that are turned into polymers. (Building blocks)
What is a colloid?
A colloid is a mixture where one substance is suspended through another substance.
What are properties of graphite?
Has a high melting point
Doesn’t conduct electricity
It is very hard and strong
Insoluble in water
What are allotropes of carbon?
Diamond
Bucky balls
Graphite
Carbon nanotubes
