NAKED RNA VIRUSES Flashcards
Poliovirus
fecal-oral
poliomyelitis
Coxsackie virus
respiratory droplet, fecal-oral, direct contact with respiratory secretions
coxsackie A&B
Hepatitis A virus
fecal-oral
hepatitis A infection
Hepatitis E virus
fecal-oral
hepatitis E infection
Norovirus
fecal-oral
viral gastroenteritis in adults
reoviridae
only RNA virus with a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) genome
poliomyelitis
replicates in motor neurons in anterior horn of spinal cord, causing paralysis
minor illness, may progress to severe muscle pain, stiffness in neck & back, flaccid paralysis
Coxsackie A
hand-foot-and-mouth disease
affects infants & children younger than 5 years; vesicular rash on hands/feet & ulcerations in mouth
Coxsackie B
myocarditis, pericarditis (heart disease)
hepatitis A infection
replicates in the GI tract then spreads to the liver, immune attack by cytotoxic T cells
hepatitis E infection
causes outbreaks of hepatitis (epidemics)
no chronic carrier state, no cirrhosis, and no hepatocellular carcinoma
subclinical (no symptoms)
viral gastroenteritis (norovirus)
most important cause of epidemic viral (nonbacterial) gastroenteritis in adults
onset of vomiting, diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramping
Rotavirus
fecal-oral
viral gastroenteritis in childhood
viral gastroenteritis (rotavirus)
most common cause of childhood diarrhea
stomach acid resistant & reaches small intestine; declining absorption of Na+ and loss of K+
