Nabothian cysts Flashcards
What are Nabothian cysts
Fluid-filled cysts on the surface of the cervix. Also called nabothian follicles or mucinous retention cysts. Harmless and unrelated to cervical cancer
Nabothian cysts presentation
Often found incidentally on speculum examination. Don’t typically cause any symptoms.
If very large, may cause a feeling of fullness in pelvis.
Smooth rounded bumps on cervix, usually near to os. Can range in size from 2mm to 30mm.
Whiteish or yellow appearance
Causes of Nabothian cysts
Columnar epithelium produce cervical mucus. When squamous epithelium slightly cover mucus-secreting columnar epithelium, the mucus becomes trapped and forms a cyst.
Can happen after child birth, minor trauma to cervix or cervicitis secondary to infection
Nabothian cysts management
Reassurance, no treatment required, Do not cause harm and often resolve spontaneously.
If uncertain, can be referred for colposcopy - may be excised or biopsied.
