What is Myasthenia Gravis?
A
- Autoimmune disorder of the neuromuscular transmission
- Disorder mediated by antibodies against the post synaptic acetylcholine receptor or by antibodies against muscle specific tyrosine kinase

What is often present in Myasthenia Gravis?
A
Thymoma
Epithelial tumour originating from thymus cells that is benign or malignant

What are the symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis?
A
- Diplopia
- Ptosis
- Muscle weakness-
- Bulbar weakness (dysphagia, choking or nasal regurgitation of fluids if severe)

What are complications of Myasthenia Gravis?
A
Myasthenia crisis which precipitates into acute respiratory failure that require mechanical ventilation

What are clinical examinations done for Myasthenia Gravis?
A
Cranial nerve exam may show opthalmoplegia or weakness of forced eyelid and mouth closure

What is the treatment for Myasthenia Gravis?
A
- Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (Pyridostigmine)
- Steroids (prednisolone)
- Rituximab
- Immunosuppressive drugs

What are investigations done for Myasthenia Gravis?
A
- ICE Test
- Presence of antibodies to the acetylcholine receptor and to muscle specific tyrosine kinase
- Specific electrophysiological test.
