myositis Flashcards
what is pyomyositis
primary skeletal muscle abscess predominantly due to staph aureus
symptoms of pyomyositis
- fever accompanied by localised skeletal muscle swelling tenderness and fluctuance progress in severity over time
- overlying skin erythema and warmth develop following hemodynamic instability and spesis
risk factors for pyomyositis
IDU, trauma, HIV, DM, corticosteroid therapy, liver disease, malnutrition and hematologic malignancy
what is gas gangrene
an acute invasion of healthy living tissue that occurs spontaneously or as a result of traumatic injury
what is treatment for myonecrosis
surgery and antibiotics
causes of myosistis
viral
fungal
parasites
is tetanus gram positive or neg
positive
how can tetanus cause spastic paralysis
neurotoxin binds to inhibitory neurons preventing release of neurotransmitters
symptoms of tetanus
lock jae trismus risus sardonicus muscle spasms autonomic instability
treatment of tetanus
Surgical debridement.
Antitoxin.
Supportive measures ( early intubation, beta blockers, avoid light, benzodiazepines for reflex spasms, some need neuromuscular blockade, magnesium sulphate)
Antibiotics for 7 to 10 days (controversial)
Penicillin
Metronidazole
Booster vaccination……..toxoid.
