Myofascial Trigger Point Referral Patterns Flashcards
Suboccipital Muscles (headache ghost)
Feels like deep head pain that radiates from the occiput to the temple
Suboccipital Symptoms
Pain which seems to penetrate deep inside, hard to localize
Tension Headaches
Common TP source of post- traumatic headache
Sternocleidomatoid muscle (amazingly Complex)
Sternal Divison: refers pain to the vertex, to the occiput, across the cheek , over the eye, to the throat & to the sternum
Clavicular Division - Across the forehead (bilateral frontal headache), and into and behind the ear
Sternocleidomastoid Symptoms
“sore throat” “swollen glands” , visual disturbance, tearing and inability to raise upper eyelid
Misdiagnosed for Facial neuralgia
Aches and can cause “Tinnitus, dizziness & Nausea”
Trapezius (Upper Fibre)
refers up the posterior lateral neck over and around the ear to the temple region and into the angle of the mandible
Trapezius (Middle Fibre)
Refers locally to the middle trapezius muscle fibres
Trapezius (Lower Fibres)
refers to pain over the entire upper trapezius muscle and may extend down over the middle and lower fibres as well
Trapezius Muscle (The Coat Hanger)
Most Common MTP observed in the body !!
Upper fibers are associated with temporal headaches
Activatin of these TP may be caused by trauma (ie whiplash)
carrying a heavy bag, heavy winter coats
Splenius Wapitis (Ache inside the skull)
Concentrates at the vertex of the head
Symptom : Stiff neck, limited rotation of the head and neck due to pain
Activated by postural stresses, overload extension or rotation of head & neck
Splenic Cervicis (Aches inside the skull)
Concentrates at the Anke of the neck & behind the eye (inside the skull)
Symptom : Stiff neck, limited rotation of the head and neck due to pain
Activated by postural stresses, overload extension or rotation of head & neck
Levator Scapulae (Stiff neck)
