Palpation for Midterm Flashcards
Sternoclavicular Joint
Starting Landmark: Jugular Notch
Trail: Slde your fingers slightly laterally and feel for a rounded end of the clavicle
M: Elevation and depression
D: When he elevates it opens when he depresses I feel it close
Acromioclavicular Joint
Starting Landmark: Clavicle
Trail: Moving laterally slightly posteriorly, Locate the AC joint by sliding finger off
Supraspinatus
O: Supraspinous Fossa of the scapula
I: Greater tubercle of the humerus (superior facet)
A: 1st 15 degrees of arm abduction + stablize humerus
Seated
Starting Landmark: Spine of the scapula
Trail: Move slightly medially & superior , curl my fingers in the supraspinous fossa . With the other hand move laterally off the acromion
Description: Thick tubercle muscle
Contraction: put arm in 15 degrees , have them abduct and you push against it
Infraspinatus
O: Infraspinous fossa of the scapula
I: Greater Tubercle of humerus (middle facet)
A: Lateral rotation + stablize humerus
Prone
Starting Landmark: Spine of scapula
Trail: move medially and inferiorly to the fossa. Other hand locate the inferior angel
Description: Proximally - flat & distally towards humerus it becomes deep
Contraction: Place hand on forearm and have them push up
Brachioradialis
O: Proximal 2/3 of supracondylar ridge of the humerus
I: Lateral surface of distal end of radius
A: Weak flexion of the elbow, maximal in mid-pronation (think about drinking beer)
Seated
Starting landmark: Olecranon
Trail: Laterally , pushing slightly inferiorly push into the supracondylar ridge - finish at the end of the radius
Contraction : have them make a fist push up into the hand in a 90 degrees
Description: superficial tuberler
Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis
O: Lateral epicondyle of the humerus
I: Dorsal aspect of base of 3rd metacarpal
A: Extend and abduct hand at wrist joint
seated
Starting landmark: Olecranon
Trail: Move laterally & distally to the epicondyle - finish at the middle finger
Contraction: have them make a fist and extend their wrist & pulse
Description deep slender muscle
Extensor Carp Radialis Longus
O: Lateral supracondylar ridge of humerus
I: Dorsal aspect of base 2nd metacarpal
A: Extend and abduct hand at wrist joint
Seated
Starting landmark: lateral epicondyle
Trail: proximally & slightly pushing inferiorly into the ridge - move posteriorly
Contraction: make a fist, and flex wrist and clench their hands (reving a motorcycle)
Description: deep/superifical slender msucle
Extensor Digitorum
O: Lateral epicondyle of humerus
I: Extensor expansions of medial 4 digits
A: Extend medial 4 digits primarily at MCP joints , secondary at IP joints
Extensor Digiti Minimi
O: Lateral epicondyle of the humerus
I: Extensor expansions of 5th digit
A: Extended 5th digit at MCP jont; secondly at IP joint
Extensor Carpi Ulnaris
O: Lateral epicondyle of humerus; posterior border of the unlawful via a share aponeurosis
O: Dorsal aspect of base of 5th metacarpal
A: Extends and adducts hand at wrist
Supinator
O: Lateral epicondyle of humerus; radial collateral and annular ligament, supinator fossa on the ulna and crest of ulna
I: Lateral, posterior and anterior surfaces of proximal 1/3 of radius
A: Supinates forearm; rotates radius to turn palm anterior or superior
