Myocardial Hibernation Flashcards
1
Q
What is Myocardial Hibernation?
A
It is a state of impaired myocardial function due to stenosing coronary atheroma leading to chronic ischemia. Function can be improved by treatment that improves perfusion.
2
Q
Why does hibernation occur?
A
It is a protective response to preserve the viability of myocytes in areas of chronic ischemia
3
Q
Where does hibernation occur?
A
Areas of hibernation may be in the territory of one coronary artery with severe stenosis, or in several arterial territories
4
Q
In what condition should Myocardial hibernation be considered?
A
Ventricular dysfunction, especially if the patient has known IHD
