mycobacterium Flashcards
what are the two important clinical species of mycobacteria?
tuberculosis and leprae
why are mycobacteria acid-fast?
lipids in cell walls
who is most at risk for TB in the US?
elderly, AIDS, urban poor
shape of tuberculosis
rod
metabolism of tuberculosis
obligate aerobe
tuberculosis colonies
clumps, due to hydrobic lipid nature
what is the difference between mycolic acid and mycoside?
mycolic acid is a fatty acid while mycoside is mycolic acid attached to a carbohydrate to form a glycolipid
what is cord factor?
two mycolic acids attached to a disaccharide, only found in virulent tuberculosis
what is sulfatide?
cord factor + sulfate, prevents phagosome from fusing with lysosome that contains bactericidal enzymes
