Myasthenia Gravis Flashcards
Avoid myasthenic and cholinergic crisis: by keeping a tight medication schedule probs will start within an hour
muscle fatigue and weakness from inadequate Ach receptor sight stimulation due to ACh receptor antibodies.
Myasthenia Gravis
peak onset (Myasthenia Gravis)
10-65 yo Younger Woman(2x), Elderly = affected
Diagnostics (Myasthenia Gravis)
Lab Test: Anti-Ach R: antibody present (85%)
Thymus abnormality (75%)
EMG (electromyography)
Tensilon Test (definitive for Dx)
Tensilon Test
definitive for Dx for Myasthenia Gravis
Muscles most affected by (Myasthenia Gravis)
bulbar (brainstem) and cranial nerves involvement–>eyes and eyelids (90%), chewing, swallowing, Facial muscles, expressions inhibited
–Distal muscles less affected
Simpson eye test
indicative of Myasthenia Gravis
Mestinon
1st Line→inhibits anticholinesterase (Myasthenia Gravis); Stop breakdown of ACH
myasthenic crisis
insufficient medication (failure to take meds, inadequate dose)
Ptosis, Dyspnea, Dysarthria (slurred/slowed), Dysphagia
Treated: Anticholinesterase
cholinergic crisis
excessive medication
Atropine
antidote for tensilon, have available
Primary feature (Myasthenia Gravis):
muscle fatigue, esp. during activity and @ end of day; Strength restored by rest
Tx (Myasthenia Gravis):
Anticholinesterase drugs (Mestinon) Corticosteroids (Prednisone) Immunosuppressants Thymectomy Plasmapheresis Immunoglobulin G
