My Study Flashcards
What is a geological timescale
The geological time scale is a framework used by scientists to organize and understand the history of Earth and the evolution of life
What happened during the mesozoic era
Mesozoic Era (252 - 66 million years ago):
Dominance of dinosaurs and other reptiles
Emergence of the first birds and mammals
Mass extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous period
What happened during the cenozoic era
Cenozoic Era (66 million years ago - present):
Rise of mammals and modern plant and animal life
Diversification of flowering plants
Emergence of hominids and the evolution of humans
What happened during the paleozoic era
Paleozoic Era (541 - 252 million years ago):
Emergence of diverse marine life, including invertebrates and early vertebrates
First land plants and animals
Mass extinction event at the end of the Permian period
What happened during the procambrian era
Precambrian Era (4.6 billion - 541 million years ago):
First single-celled organisms (prokaryotes) emerged
Gradual development of more complex eukaryotic cells
Appearance of the first multicellular organisms
What is a law
Patterns that repeat itself….e.growth, heat, and motion
Whatis a theory
An explanation for extreme found e.gbig bang and theory of evolution
What is mass Extinction
A period of time where there was a loss of diversity.
What are the causes of mass Extinction
☆Volcanic Eruption
☆meteor and asteroids hitting the earth.
☆Ice age
☆Changes in sea level,tsunami
☆continental Drift
What is continental drift
the theory where at one point in time, all of the continents were joined together in one large landmass prior to splitting apart and drifting into their current positions
Our current mass Extinction is due to…..?
☆Individual
☆Diforestration
☆☆ozone depletion
☆Habitate Distruction
What are fossils
Fossils are the remains, impressions or traces of an organism who lived thousands of years ago.
How does fossilisation occur
1)The animal dies and the body is covered with mud.
2)The soft tissue breaks down.
3)The skeleton is covered under lauers of sand .
4)The skeleton is exposed to high temperature and pressure.
5)The bone mineral isreplacrd by a harder molecule.
What is a missing link
A transitional fossil, which is in intermediary forms of life that show ongoing change
Types of missing links
☆coelacenth -link between fishes and amphibians
☆Archaeopteryx -link between dinosaurs and birds
☆Thrinaxodo -link between reptiles and mammals
