Chemistry Of Life☆☆☆☆☆ Flashcards
What is the role of water
Water is the most important inorganic compound that is essential for life
Functions of water
•A solvent for both organic and inorganic compounds
•A medium in which all chemical reactions occur
•required for photosynthesis
•regulates body temperature
Two types of micro elements
1.iron
2.iodine
Iron
●FUNCTIONS:
•Required for synthesis of haemoglobin
•forms chlorophyll in plants
Deficiency disease
1.Anaemia
2.Chlorosis in plants
Iodine
●FUNCTION:
•Component of the hormone thyroxin which is created by the thyroid gland in humans.
●Disease deficiency
•Goitre(swelling of neck or larynx) in humans
What is a enzyme
Biological catalyst that speed up the rate of a chemical reaction without being used up in the chemical reaction itself
Anabolic reaction
Occurs when a complex molecule is built up from simple molecules.
Catabolic reaction
Occurs when a complex reaction is broken down into simple molecules.
Catabolic reaction
Occurs when a complex reaction is broken down into simple molecules.
Functions of proteins
•Source of energy
•permiability of cell membranes
•enzymes
•haemoglobin
Protein
A large molecule made up of elements, carbon nitrogen, oxygen nitrogen and some phosphorus, iron and is a organic compound.
Lipids
Organic molecules made up of carbon oxygen and hydrogen, and they are fats and oils.
Saturated fats
From animals ,are solids and have single bonds between atoms
Unsaturated fats
Are from plants and fish ,are liquids and have double bonds between some of the atoms.
Balanced diets
Vitamins
●A-night blindness
●B1-beri beri
●C-scurvy
●D-rickets
●E-poor nerve condition
