My Golf Heuristics: Faults and Fixes 2017 Flashcards
My Common Swing Faults
NOTE: I need to slow practice the remedies, 25 swings each day.
BALL PUSHES TO RIGHT FROM MIDDLE TO END OF FLIGHT
- Didn’t transfer weight and swung only with arms.
- Did not do “level out” transition which menns I swing over the top,
[Not leveling out my club and swinging over the top is common for me to forget. I normally do not figure this out until hours after I played my round.]
Ball pulls left:
- Did not do Arnold Palmer hands high follow through. [This happens when I come into impact leading heavy with left and pulling grip into the ball impact. This is the correct impact but problem is my FF is low which allows me to wrap the swing around my body and pull left. To rectify this I must finish high with anti-hook FF like Palmer/Hogan]
It is common for me to forget this when playing.
Sequences of my Down Swing
- BS, normal, take straight back like I learned with Golf Loopy.
- Hold strong triangle start to finish throughout entire swing.
- Extend my hands very high, cocking club with hand pointing golf shaft a little toward target at top of BS.
- Twelve inches with hand cock at top of BS need to be slow, timed with 12 inches of hand cock on DS–Jack Nicklaus.
- AGAIN. Last 12 inches of hand cock and first 12 inches of DS hand uncocking must be slow and at same speed with each other. Do not rush this part!
[continued on reverse side]
- On my DS it feels like I am pulling a rope at end of triangle by pulling slowly grip to level out position and tracing target line with grip and golf shaft.
As I drop into my leveled out slot, slowly my weight is starting to shift forward to left foot. Then I release.
- RELEASE: At this leveled out point, my weight is quickly transferred to left foot as I am pulling the grip hard into exact back of ball. I am leading with my left.
- My release goes into Palmer anti-hook high hands position.
Notes:
- Shoulder turn SB timed with hip turn.
- I should feel a good stretch at top of BS.
My Swing 7/2017
Main Objective: Shoulders must be timed to pelvis pivot. Actually shoulders have a slight delay because swing is lead with hips first. Keep in mind that a slow swing with weight transfer is the key.
- No release until weight transferred into left heel pivot. At the same time do transition tracing inside to out path leading grip to ball with shaft tracing in to out very slightly, or you will hit shot to the right badly.
- Focus on back of ball spot. Think where your impact line is going to be. Bow left wrist a little on release but DO NOT TWIST YOUR ARMS and create a pull. Your bump weight transfer will take care of the pelvis pivot. On top of BS left foot should be up on toe with your left heel raised. Then on DS you lightly plant your left heel while weight is being transferred. You make certain you are going to finish high; throw soda can over shoulder. Do not hit down on the ball or up on it. Hit back center of ball with bottom grooves in iron.
Faults and causes
Pull left:
- Shoulder fire too late.
- Twisted forearm going into impact.
- CF Closed. Check CF points according to SOG.
PUSH right:
- Failed to make transition.
- Didn’t trace shaft line to target line on DS.
- CF open.
- No weight transfer and pelvis pivot.
Wedge tips SOG
These tips for the most part work on all my clubs, even the 3Wood.
- Shallow swing angle
- Pull the suitcase on shorter wedge shots when going BS to 8 or 9 clock position. Esp. on 8 iron chip shots. The grass outside the green will grab my club and slow it down resulting in a muffed chip shot. Pull the suitcase and a tight grip on club to break through this grass resistance. REM to keep hands in front of my chips and short pitches. Try to make direct contact with ball on bottom grooves of club.
- BS will take 2/3’s of your time. DS is quicker, 1/3 of swing time. SOG suggest I mentally say, Jordan on BS and Speith on DS. This works on all my clubs, even 3 Wood.
- On full wedge shots and regular iron shots, make certain CF meets all check points from SOG video on Ipad. REM the taped golf glove on shaft. Also remember to match CF on TA with my spine angle which is the same as SOG check points.
Tip for how to hit a perfect 3 Wood, from Golf Mag. 12/17.
Here is the way to catch fairway woods flush. Your swing always bottoms out, more or less, under your left armpit.
With the ball positioned behind this point, the club is still descending as it nears impact, great for irons.
Positioned ahead of your left armpit, the club will actually be ascending into impact, great for driving.
Because you want to nip the ball cleanly off the turf with a wood, play the ball right where your swing reaches the bottom of its arc: under your left armpit. Great for fairway woods!
