BR_Ben Hogan 5 Lessons Flashcards
Don’t lift arms higher than the glass plane.
Never break the glass plane. The glass plane runs from your Adam’s apple down to outside part of ball.
Don’t drop R. elbow and open clubface on start of DS. [MN]
When I emphasize R. elbow unfold I am greatly opening clubface.
Name the key steps on Back swing. [MN]
- One piece TA, instant 40 degree hinge up, thumbs up. 2. Triceps resting on Pectoral muscles. Left arm tricep glued to your chest. Left knee kicks toward your right knee. 3. Clubface then grip traces target line. 4. Push Triangle up. Left arm rigid. 5. BS stretch slowly until back is facing target; shoulder clock position 12 & 6.
- Swing Thought: Stretch and pull
GRIP PRESSURE TOOTHPASTE LIGHT
Name the key steps on start of Down Swing. [MN]
- Slow action; no rush.
- Start with slow smooth transition, pulling left then back plant Right rear of left heel on ground. This is end of slow action.
- Pulling Right arm downward quicker and quicker, Maintain left arm Triangle here. Swing path line about 10 degrees to ball impact.
- just above 0900 bow left wrist and accelerate R. elbow drops in front of pocket watch. Right arm into bowed whip snap on ball.
- Depends on your DS speed if you are giving the club time to square. You will need to swing slower or even better, snap the impact with right arm faster.
- Swing Thought: Grip pressure 3, Balance and Snap Close impact,
Name the key steps from midway to impact. [MN]
- When club is parallel to ground the grip should be pointing to target. Visualize triangle with hands working as one unit. Leading with stronger Left.
- On this part of swing you feel the big weight transfer.
- When swinging to impact, you pivot shoulders so that L. shoulder snaps up quickly. Your Left shoulder snaps up making you come into shot with the proper R. shoulder low. With this shoulder snap your weight is going forward and you can accelerate hard into ball. Your knees will start to kiss.
- Make certain you are swinging triangle in to out at about a 10 degree path to ball.
- Triangle is leading body. Hands working as one unit; Left leading harder to close clubface.
On this acceleration and through the impact be concentrating on your R. thumb up and closing clubface.
Swing thought is Grip pressure 3, Balance, Snap Close impact
Name the key steps after impact. [MN]
- Hit ball with both arms as one unit, equal power with both arms, but lead with left, like a backhand shot.
- Leading with the left, bow your left wrist for extra power.
- Contact ball in Left lower quadrant more power and longer row on ground. Hit ball from 7 to 1.
- With thumbs up on FF, finish high!
How do I make the shot very high for going uphill? [MN]
The key to get the ball up quickly is to make a larger and faster shoulder snap up.
Comments.
In general, everything is relaxed until the shoulder snap. Even though the action is slow, you are holding back a lot of tension and built up power. On the shoulder snap you quickly but gradually release all of this power into your shot. This is what makes the shot go long and pretty!
Setup review
Tight “V” with triceps resting pressure 4 on pecs from shoulders to halfway to elbows. p. 49
Knees pointing inward. p. 59
BS review.
- Left shoulder down. Right shoulder up.
- Clock position 12 & 6
- Shoulders and left arm in alignment with each othere.
- Continue BS until golf ball is visible past shoulder turn.
- Chin resting on left shoulder p. 63
- Right leg SB same braced position as address with knee slightly pointed inward. This inward prevents you from going too far to the right and throwing you balance weight away.
- Left knee SB pointing a little left and forward until the two part transition. [left pull then back into ground on left heel]
- DS will be a tighter circle to impact because right arm is coming down fast!
Impact right arm motion.
Coming to impact position, right arm is similar to sidearm/underhand toss to 1st base.
In fact if you think about it, the entire DS is bracing a pivot point with planted left heel and a side arm baseball throw to 1st base.
