SOG Tips and Tidbits 1 2018 Flashcards

Q

SOG 6.20.17:

  1. Putters do not go straight back and straight through. They rotate face position.
  2. Does a putter reach peak speed before impact? YES.

Strokes:

Follow Through must be a mirror image of the back swing.

Pulls = High on BS; low on FT. This causes my pulls! Strokes SB equal! A Jack Nicklas fundemental!

Hands. First 12 inches of speed of hands on BS must equal speed of hands on first 12 inches of DS. Jack Nicklas fundemental.

Power. Impact SB with slightly bowed left hand/ or think of it as the heel of right hand impacting. [heel of right hand is bottom of palm of hand, just above my wrist.]

A

Make a swing arc for practice in yard. Follow arc path slowly from DS through transition through impact, back up into mirror image of hand height and position you used on BS. Maybe a piece of old hose will work.

Fade and Draw:

Fade = Move ball 3 balls forward in arc.

Draw = Move ball 3 balls rearward in arc.

Then make a normal swing. – Tiger Woods

Q

What powers your swing?

Wrist = 10%

Hands and Wrist = 20%

Hands, wrist and arms = 40%

Legs, hips and weight transfer = 60%.

60% of the power is legs, hips and weight transfer. Remember this on my swing!

REM: to cock up wrist on BS after hands clear my right leg. This gives much more zip in my release!

In a full swing, the club travels 28 feet on average.

Why are balls dimpled? The dimples trap air which creates spin, which makes the ball go further and higher!

Wedge play tips SOG 12/12/17

Theme: Stop hooking your wedge to the Green!

  1. RH grip between 1st and 2nd knuckle, not in the palm of your right hand.
  2. Wrist cock is up and down, not in line with club on the BS. You TA normally but once you are past your right hip, you cock the club vertically upward.
  3. From DS to impact, you open stance at contact with ball.

Q

3 Chipping requirements from Phil Mickelson.

These are chips, look like mini pitches, 10 yards:

  1. Because of high loft, you must lead with hands to keep leading edge under ball. [fwd press like]
  2. Your weight must be on front foot. Normally 80-90%. If lie is really bad then 100%. If fluffy, then about 60%.
  3. You must decide if you are going low or going high chip.

A. If going low, ball is played off you back foot. [can vary extreme behind back foot]

B. If going high, ball is played off front foot. [Can vary extreme in front of front foot, like sand bunker]

C. Never between feet, because if ball in middle of stance, you cannot keep your weight forward.

[See Martin Halls short game tips on other side of card.]

A

Tips from Martin Hall’s short game video series.

This is talking about how to pitch in different lies.

Pitch ball above feet

  1. Choke down on shaft
  2. Aim way right, ball will hook
  3. Weight on balls of feet
  4. Flatten out swing

Pitch ball uphill lie

  1. Hit up a club more, pitch will go shorter distance than normal, plus it goes high!
  2. All weight stays on back foot
  3. Keep spine inline with slope of hill
  4. Lean shaft fwd press to prevent blading the ball

Pitch ball in the rough

  1. Play ball off middle toe on right foot
  2. Steep angle impact, hits more ball than grass
  3. Fwd press club then “POP” ball out toward target. [club will hit the ground, there is no FF. Ball simply pops to green]
