AFS=Autofocus Single
AFF=Autofocus Flexible

How do you select between AFS and AFF
You do so on the first page on the front page of the main menu.
What does AFF do?
If AFF is selected the camera will attempt to keep the subject in focus if it moves, but movement can’t be predicted. AFF mode is useful mode to use if you can’t predict whether the subject will be still or motionless, but as a rule it’s best to use AFS mode with stationary subjects and AFC with moving subjects.
What are the Gh5’s six autofocus modes?
Face/Eye detection Tracking AF 225-Area AF Custom Multi Area AF 1-Area AF Pinpoint AF
What does the Face/Eye Detection mode do?
Face/Eye Detection: In this mode the GH5 can detect up to 15 faces. You’re still able to set an AF point by tapping on the screen, but if the camera detects a face it will focus on that. If it detects eyes in the face it will focus on the eye closest to the camera. If the box around the detected face is yellow, that face is in focus. If there additional faces in the scene they will be surrounded by a white box, but they will not be brought into focus.
What does the Tracking AF mode do?
In this mode once the AF frame has been positioned over the subject and the shutter button pressed half-way, the camera will focus on the target and attempt to track it as it moves around the scene and as its distance from the camera changes. You can see the focus point moving around the frame and can judge it’s success at tracking the subject.
What does Multi Area AF do?
When this mode is selected you can set the size and shape of the AF area. To set the shape, press the Fn3 button followed by the up navigation key. There are Horizontal, Vertical, Central and 3 Custom patterns available. The location of the active area is set with a tap on the screen, its size can be adjusted using the front or rear dials.
What does 1-Area AF do?
This allows you to target a small area of the scene for focusing,
the control dials to increase or decrease the size of the active zone as you need.
What does Pinpoint AF do?
: In this mode the camera uses a small point for focusing and the screen enlarges when the shutter release is pressed down half-way to enable you to check the focusing.
What’s the problem with the Tracking AF mode?
it struggles to keep up with very fast moving subjects.
What’s the problem with the 1-area AF
the most useful. Vary the size of the AF point depending the size of subject. However, if the subject is moving, you need to be able to keep the active area over it.
When is Custom Multi Area AF useful?
Useful with moving subjects as it tells the camera to use AF points within a specific zone. It can be a good choice if you’re struggling to keep the 1-Area AF area over a moving subject.
What does the “P” stand for on the mode dial and what does it do?
“Program mode”
The camera has full automatic control of shutter and aperture settings.

What do C1, C2 ad C3 stand for?
These modes are used to configure the camera to preset settings that you have chosen in the past.
To save camera settings for the preset modes, first configure your camera with the settings you want to save and then select the Wrench / Cust. Set Mem menu item followed by C1, C2, C3-1, C3-2, C3-3.
C3 can actually hold three different configurations. To select the one you wish to use, first select C3 using the Mode Dial and then press the icon on the top left of the rear screen. This will display a menu allowing to select the configuration you want to use.
What des the pallete icon on the mode dial do?
Allows you to choose from a number of filters that can be applied to the image. This mode is probably not worth using since all of this can be achieved during post-processing.
What does the ia on the icon stand for and what does it do?
Camera evaluates the scene and chooses the best settings. There are actually two sub-modes available in this mode. Intelligent Auto and Intelligent Auto +. In Intelligent Auto mode, the camera controls everything whereas in Intelligent Auto + mode you have the ability to override some of the choices made by the camera.
When the camera mode is set to Intelligent Auto, a new menu becomes available on the rear screen which lets you choose between Intelligent Auto and Intelligent Auto +.
Additional menus are also available in this mode:
iHandheld Night Shot – when enabled, takes a number of images and combines them. This is probably done to mitigate low light noise.
iHDR – when enabled, takes a number of images at different exposures to increase the dynamic range of the image.
If you find that iHandheld Night Shot and iHDR are grayed out, it’s because both options are only available when the Drive Mode dial is set to single shot.

In Intelligent Auto mode, the camera controls everything whereas in Intelligent Auto + mode you have the ability to override some of the choices made by the camera.
