Mutations Flashcards
what are mutations?
a sudden change in the amount or arrangement of genetic material in a cell
what is a gene mutation?
- change in sequence of bases in DNA
state two types of gene mutations
- base substitution
- base deletion
what is base substitution?
nucleotide is replaced by another
how does base substitution affect the amino acid sequence and what consequences can arise?
- some mutations do not affect the sequence due to degenerate nature of genetic code
- however, if the mutation affects the sequence, then mRNA copy is altered - different complementary anticodon of tRNA - so different primary structure so altered tertiary structure will affect the active site. This could produce a non-functional protein
what is base deletion?
nucleotide is lost from DNA sequence`
what is the effect of deletion?
- causes frameshift
- different amino acid sequence
- polypeptide unlikely to function
what can affect the rate of gene mutation?
mutagenic agents increase the rate
what is a chromosome mutation
change in the structure or number of whole chromosomes
what is the term to explain when there is three or more sets of chromosomes?
- in which organisms does this usually occur?
- polyploidy
- in plants
what is the term to explain when a pair of chromosomes fail to separate in meiosis?
non-disjunction
give an example of a condition due to non-disjunction
down’s syndrome - gamete has extra chromosome so offspring has extra chromosome (21)
will the mutation be inherited in somatic mutation?
no
will the mutation be inherited in gametic mutation
yes
- occurs in gomads
