Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
The musculoskeletal system
Bones, joints, and muscles.
Joints
Where 2 bones meet to allow movement
Connective tissue
Anchors, connects, and supports other body tissue
Cartilage
Connective tissue that cushions joints
Ligaments
Strong bands of connective tissue (connects bones, supports joints)
Synovial membrane
Lines joints, and contains synovial fluid (lubricates joints)
Skeletal muscle
Muscle attached to bone
Smooth muscle
Muscle in the stomach, intestines, and blood vessels
Cardiac muscle
Muscle in the heart
Closed/simple fracture
Bone breaks but there is no puncture in skin
Open/compounded fracture
Broken bone breaks through the skin
Compression fracture
Bones get pushed together
Fragmented fracture
There are many pieces
Complete fracture
Bone is completely broken
Partial fracture
Bone is only cracked
Reduction
Brings ends of bones together
Closed reduction
Reduction done without opening the skin
Open reduction
Reduction done by opening the skin
Open reduction with internal fixation
Reduction done by opening the skin and pins, plates, or wires are inserted to hold the bones in place
Cast care
- Keep dry
- Report signs of pain, infection, swelling, or abnormal sensations
- Plaster dries in 24-28 hours, do not dent or overheat
Traction
1.Immobilizes by pulling bones into alignment
2. Types of tractions - skin, cervical, skeletal
3. Check pin site or contact site for signs of breakdown or infection
Braces
Support fracture when cast or splint cannot be applied
Splint
Immobilizes when cast cannot be applied
Hip fracture
- Usually requires surgery
- Slower healing in elderly
- Increased anxiety and fear with mobility
