Skin

A
  1. Protection
    a) Stops things from getting in or out
    b) Sensation (hot/cold, pain, pressure)
  2. Absorption (e.x., vitamin D from the sun)
  3. Regulate body temperature
    Blood vessels dilate (widen) = cool down
    Blood vessels constrict (narrow) = warm up

Aging

A
  1. Skin becomes less elastic (wrinkles)
  2. Skin loses its strength
  3. Age/liver spots appear on hands
  4. Nerve endings decrease in number (decreased sensation and ability to feel pain)
  5. Blood vessels decrease in number
  6. Fatty tissue layer is lost (increased sensitivity to cold)
  7. Skin thins/sags/becomes fragile (tears easily)
  8. Skin becomes dry and itchy (less oil production)
  9. Sensitivity to extreme heat/cold
  10. Nails become thick and tough
  11. Hair whitens, grays, thins, and becomes dry
