Types of musculoskeletal injuries

Rule of thirds
If the injury is located in the upper or
lower third of the bone, treat the injury as a joint
injury.
If the injury is in the middle third of the
bone, treat it as a mid-shaft injury.
Sign and symptoms of musculoskeletal injuries
1 pain
2 swelling
3Deformity’s
4 discolouration of the skin
5 inability to use the effected part normally
Slings
A sling is used to support an upper extremity if a
musculoskeletal injury damages the usual support
structure
General cares for musculoskeletal injuries
R/ rest
I/ immobilized
C/cool
E/elevate
Specific care for shoulder injuries
Help the patient to keep the injured arm in the
position that he or she is naturally holding it in
Specific care for forearms wrist and injuries
roll of gauze can be used to immobilize a hand a start wrapping at the wrist
cover the hand with
a roller bandage
If the forearm is fractured, place a splint under the forearm and secure it.
An injured finger can be splinted to an adjacent
finger.
Specific care for femur injuries
Apply traction splint
Stop external bleeding before immobilizing the patient or even putting a traction splint on them
Specific care for knee injuries
Support a knee injury in the bent position if the
patient cannot straighten the knee put pillow underneath it.
Specific care for lower leg injuries
apply a rigidlong splint to the lateral side of the injured leg, extending from just below the hip to below the foot. Place a shorter padded splint on the medial side of the leg, extending from the groin to thefoot
