Abduction
Moving a body part away from an axis or the median line
Adduction
Moving a body part toward the center or toward the median line
Flexion
Bending a limb at a joint
Extension
Straightening a limb at a joint
Pronation
Turning the forearm so that the palm is down
Supination
Turning the forearm so that the palm is up
Inversion
Moving the sole of the foot inward at the ankle
Eversion
Moving the sole of the foot outward at the ankle
Rotation
 moving the head around a central axis
Muscle test grading
- Full ROM against gravity, full resistance
- Full ROM against gravity, some resistance
- Full ROM with gravity
- Full ROM with gravity eliminated (passive motion)
- Slight contraction
- No contraction
Phalen test
Reproduces numbness and burning in a person with carpal tunnel syndrome
Tinel sign
Percussion of the median nerve produces burning and tingling along its distribution, which is a positive Tinel sign
Straight leg raising test
Maneuver that helps to confirm the presence of sciatica and a herniated nucleus pulposus. Normally produces no pain.
