Musculature (exam 2) Flashcards
Myomeres
myotomes = muscle segments (ancient characteristics, lampreys have this). W shape = allows fish to move is body from side to side
Myosepta
mycommata = connective tissue (separation) between segments
horizontal and median/vertical septa,
Horizontal : seperates muscle massfrom up to bottom (from midline)
Vertical: separates muscle mass from left and right
carinalis
carinalis muscles controls fins
epaxial
above horizontal septum
hypaxial
Under the horizontal septum
Red vs. White vs, Pink muscle
Red (‘“slow”) muscle:
Aerobic
For marathons, not spriting. require s lots of oxygen
Found mostly along lateral line
Usually a small fraction of body mass
While (”fast”) muscle:
Anaerobic
For sprinting
Swimming speed increases = which recruits more white muscle
Pink muscles:
Intermediate in structure and function
Scattered throughout body

myoglobin
protein that stores oxygen for fish muscles and also acts as a pigment
Slow vs. Fast muscle
Slow:
Aerobic
For marathons, not spriting. requires lots of oxygen
Fast:
Anaerobic
For sprinting
