Muscular System Flashcards
Why do muscles need oxygen in exercise?
So they can move the body
Pectorals?
•Adduction and flexion (horizontally) at the shoulder
• During a forehand drive in tennis
Biceps?
•flexion at the elbow
•when curling weights
Quadriceps?
•extension at the knee
•performing a drop kick in rugby
Gluteals?
•extension, rotation and abduction of the leg at the hip
• pushing the body forward when running
Gastrocnemius?
•pointing the foot downwards
•standing on the toes in ballet pointe work
Hamstrings?
•flexion at the knee
•bringing the foot back before kicking a football
Latissimus Dorsi?
•Extension, adduction or rotation at the shoulder
•during butterfly stroke in swimming
Triceps?
•Extension at the elbow
•during a jump shot in netball
Abdominals?
•flexion at the waist
•during a sit up
Trapezius?
•extension at the neck
•preparing to head a football
Deltoids?
•flexion, extension, abduction or circumduction at the shoulder
•during front crawl in swimming
What can muscles do?
Pull
What are agonistic muscles?
Pairs of muscles that work against each other
What is the agonist?
The muscle that is contracting
What is the antagonist?
The muscles that’s relaxing
What are fixators?
Other muscles that help the agonist to work properly by stabilising it where it attaches to the bone so it doesn’t move
What are the fixators when the biceps are flexing at the elbow joint
The deltoid and trapezius muscles
The antagonist muscle pairs at elbow during flexion?
Agonist - biceps
Antagonist - triceps
