Muscular System Flashcards
A system that includes muscle cells and muscle tissues.
Muscular System
Functions of The Muscular System
Body movement (Locomotion)
Maintenance of posture Respiration
Communication (Verbal and Facial)
Constrictions of organs and vessels
Heart beat
Production of body heat (Thermogenesis)
- diaphragm and intercostal contractors
- peristalsis of intestinal tract
- Vasoconstriction of blood vessels and other structures (Pupils)
Properties of Muscles
Excitability
Contractility
Extensibility
Elasticity
Capacity of muscle to respond to a stimulus.
Excitability
Ability of a muscle to shorten and generate pulling force.
Contractility
Muscle can be stretched back to its original length.
Extensibility
Ability of muscle to recoil to original resting length after stretched.
Elasticity
Makes up the thick middle
layer of the heart.
Cardiac Muscle
Consists of thick and thin filaments that are not arranged into sarcomeres giving it a nonstriated pattern.
Smooth Muscle
Is found throughout the body and functions to contract in response to a stimulus.
Skeletal Muscle
Is a rare type of myositis (inflammation of muscles and their associated tissues, including blood vessels).
Polymyositis
Is a rare inflammatory muscle disease. It can affect people of any age or sex, though it’s
more often seen in women
Dermatomyositis
Is a group of inherited myopathies. These conditions all cause muscle loss and weakness.
Muscular Dystrophy
Is an autoimmune neuromuscular disease. Neuromuscular diseases are caused by problems with how the nerves and muscles work together.
Myasthenia gravis
Is also called Lou Gehrig’s disease. This group of rare neurological diseases affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
