Muscular System Flashcards
responds to stimulation from nerve impulses.
Properties of Muscle
Irritability (Electrical Excitability) -
responds to stimuli by contracting lengthwise, or shortening.
Properties of Muscle
Contractility
muscle can be stretched up to 30% of its resting length.
Properties of Muscle
Extensibility
after being stretched, have a tendency to recoil to their original resting length.
Properties of Muscle
Elasticity
that are attached to the skeleton and are responsible for voluntary body movements. The muscle fibers are multi-nucleated, transversely striated and are grouped in parallel bundles called fasciculi.
Classification of Muscles
Skeletal muscles
occur mainly in blood vessels and tubular organs of the GI tract, reproductive, urinary and respiratory systems
- Under autonomic control - they are involuntary.
- Muscle fibers are unstriated and contain a single nucleus.
Classification of Muscles
Smooth muscles
- found only in the wall of the heart
- Unique property of auto-rhythmicity;
- Contractions are involuntary and have an intrinsic rhythm
- Intercalated discs that help hold adjacent cells together and transmit the force of contraction from cell to cell
- Striated
Classification of Muscles
Cardiac muscle
are dense connective tissue that attaches the muscle to bone.
Structure of Skeletal Muscles
Tendons
the less moveable attachment of the muscle
Structure of Skeletal Muscles
Origin
The more moveable bony attachment of the muscle.
Structure of Skeletal Muscles
Insertion
the fleshy thick part of the muscle; also called the gaster.
Structure of Skeletal Muscles
Belly
binds individual fibers together and supports capillaries and nerve endings
Associated Connective Tissue
Endomysium
another sheath covering that binds groups of muscle fibers together into bundles called fasciculi o supports the nerves and blood vessels that serve the surrounding fasciculi
Associated Connective Tissue
Perimysium
sheath covering the entire muscle
Associated Connective Tissue
Epimysium
a fibrous connective tissue that covers the muscle and attaches to the skin.
Associated Connective Tissue
Fascia
