Muscular Pathologies Flashcards
Fibromyalgia
Widespread pain and joint stiffness without any signs of inflammation or tissue degeneration.
Massage and fibromyalgia
Use a gradual increase in pressure.
Types of primary headaches
Tension, migraine and cluster headaches.
Tension headaches
Band-like, non-throbbing and does not worsen with activity.
Migraine headaches
Pounding headache with sensitivity to light, smells and sounds. Also called a vascular headache.
Cluster headaches
Found behind the eye and can occur up to 8 times per day.
Secondary headaches
Headaches which are caused by something else.
Headaches and massage
Only for tension headaches, otherwise contraindicated.
Myofascial pain syndrome
Chronic pain disorder with trigger points.
Useful trigger points
Use pain to protect something, for example a damaged joint.
Massage and myofascial pain syndrome
Massage directly on unuseful trigger points.
Plantar fasciitis
Chronic inflammation of the plantar fascia
Massage and plantar fasciitis
Massage once acute inflammation has resolved. Use compression, transverse friction and myofascial techniques.
Shin splints
Pain in the medial tibial region after high impact activities.
Massage and shin splints
After acute inflammation has resolved, local massage with compression, transverse friction and sustained myofascial techniques.
Strain
Overstretched or torn muscle or tendon
Massage and strains
Massage with friction after the acute phase has resolved.
Tendinopathy
Any chronic tendon condition.
Tendonitis
Inflammation of the tendon.
Tendinosis
Degeneration of the tendon.
Tendinosynovitis
Inflammation of the synovial sheath surrounding a tendon.
Epicondylosis
Inflammation of the tendon where it attaches to the epicondyle.
Tennis elbow
Epicondylosis of the lateral condyle of the elbow.
Golfer’s elbow
Epicondylosis of the medial condyle of the elbow.
Massage and tendinopathies
Massage with friction after the acute phase.
Rotator cuff tears
Shoulder muscle is torn from the attachment.
Inpingement syndrome
Supraspinatus tendon and subacromial bursa become compressed.
Massage and rotator cuff tears
Massage with friction.
Massage and impingement syndrome
Massage with friction.
Torticollis
Involves recurrent spasms of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Can cause head tilt and is acquired through injury.
Whiplash-Associated Disorders
Neck injuries to the bones, muscles or intervertebral discs caused by whiplash.
Massage and whiplash-associated disorders
Massage the posterior neck and sternocleidomastoid.
