Muscles Flashcards
Common features of the hamstring group
They all flex the knee, extend the hip and posteriorly tilt the pelvis.
Muscles of the hamstring group
Biceps femoris, semimembranosus, semitendinosus
Origin of the biceps femoris
Long head originates on the ischial tuberosity and the short head on the lateral lip of the linea aspera.
Insertion of the biceps femoris
Head of the fibula
Actions of the biceps femoris
Flex the knee, extend the hip, posteriorly tilt the pelvis, laterally rotate the flexed knee and laterally rotate the hip.
Innervation of the biceps femoris
Sciatic nerve. The tibial branch for the long head and the fibular branch for the short head.
Palpation key for biceps femoris
Client is prone and resist flexion of the leg and extension of the thigh for the long head.
The knee flexes at the ______ joint.
Tibiofemoral.
The hip extends at the _____ joint.
Coxal.
The pelvis tilts at the _____ joint.
Lumbosacral
Semitendinosus origin
Ischial tuberosity
Semitendinosus insertion
Proximal medial shaft of the tibia at the pes anserinus tendon.
Semitendinosus actions
Flex the knee, extend the hip, posteriorly tilt the pelvis, medially rotate the hip and medially rotate the flexed knee.
Innervation of semitendinosus
Tibial branch of the sciatic nerve.
Semitendinosus palpation key
Client prone, resist flexion of the leg at the knee.
Semimembranosus origin
Ischial tuberosity
Semimembranosus insertion
Posterior aspect of the medial condyle of the tibia
Actions of semimembranosus
Flex the knee, extend the hip, posteriorly tilt the pelvis, medially rotate the hip, medially rotate the flexed knee.
Innervation of semimembranosus
Tibial branch of the sciatic nerve.
Palpation key of semimembranosus
Client prone, resist flexion of the leg and palpate on either side of semitendinosus.
Common features of quadriceps femoris group
All extend the knee, insert at the tibial tuberosity and are innervated by the femoral nerve.
Muscles of the quadriceps femoris group
Rectus femoris, vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis.
Origin of rectus femoris
Anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS)
Insertion of rectus femoris
Tibial tuberosity via the patellar tendon
Actions of the rectus femoris
Extend the knee at the tibiofemoral joint and flexes the hip at the coxal joint.
Innervation of the rectus femoris
Femoral nerve
Palpation key of the rectus femoris
Client supine with legs dangling; resist extension of the knee for the lower fibers and flexion of the thigh for upper fibers.
Origin of vastus intermedius
Anterior and lateral shaft of the femur
