Muscular And Skeletal System Flashcards
What is abduction?
Movement away from the midline of the body
What is adduction?
Movement towards midline of body
What is circumduction?
Circular movement around the joint
What is flexion?
Angle of joint is decreasing
What is extension?
Angle of joint is increasing
What is rotation?
Turning around an axis fixed point
What is an antagonistic muscle pair?
When one muscle contracts and pulls its partner relaxes
What is the antagonistic muscle?
The muscle that relaxes
What is the agonist?
The muscle that creates movement
What is a isotonic contraction?
A muscle contraction that results in movement
What does concentric mean?
The muscle contracts and shortenS
What is eccentric?
The muscle contracts and lengthens
What is an isometric contraction?
Muscle contracts, but no movement occurs
What is the skeletal system?
Structure and function
Joints and movement
What is the respiratory system?
Mechanics of breathing
Delivery of oxygen to the muscles
What is the muscular system?
Major muscles of the body
How muscles create movement
What is the cardiovascular system?
Pathway of blood around the body
What are long bones and what do they do?
Long straight bones that allow gross movements, e.g. femur
What are short bones and what do they do?
Small bones that allow fine controlled movements, e.g. tarsals
What are flat bones and what do they do?
Large flat bones that protect vital organs e.g. ribs
What are the six functions of the skeletal system?
Movement
Mineral storage
Protection
Red blood cells production
Support and shape
What do ligaments do?
Attach bones to bone
What do tendons do?
Attach muscles to bone
What are synovial joints?
Also known as as freely movable joints, they are the most common type of joint in the body
What are hinge joints?
Allow body parts to move forwards and backwards but not side to side, e.g. knee ankle and elbow
What are ball and socket joints?
The rounded end of one bone fits inside a cup shaped ending on another bone, e.g. shoulder and hip
