muscles of the tongue (external tongue muscles) Flashcards
genioglossus
(general plate)
O: internal & medial surface of the mandible (inside of the chin)
I: inferior tongue & body of the hyoid bone
A: depresses & protracts the tongue
styloglossus
O: styloid process of the temporal bone
I: inferolateral tongue
A: retracts & elevates the tongue
This muscle runs just under the tongue. Think about it, it elevates the tongue as it is beneath it, pushes it from down.
hyoglossus
Below the styloglossus and is a bigger muscle
O: body & greater horn of the hyoid bone
I: Inferolateral tongue
A: depresses & protracts the tongue.
Think about it: since it is a big muscle, it is heavy. Therefore it depresses the tongue (keeps it down).
Tongue
IS a muscle.
Has small muscles that fold, curl, squeeze to talk and chew. These muscles are called intrinsic tongue muscles.
