muscles of the pelvic floor Flashcards
what are 3 roles of the pelvic floor muscles?
- supporting the function of organs located in the pelvic bowl.
- assisting with the voluntary control of expelling urine and feces.
- resisting and/or supporting an increase in intra-abdominal pressure.
what are some of the muscles that are found in the pelvic floor?
Levator ani, pelvic diaphragm, piriformis, urogenital diaphragm, obutator internus.
ischiocavernosus
O: ischial tuberosities
I: tissue of the penis or clitoris
A: slows down venous drainage, maintains erection of erectile tissue.
Bulbospongiosus
O: central tendon of the perineum (+ midline of the raphe of the penis).
I: Tissue of the penis or clitoris.
A: maintains erection of erectile tissue.
Muscles of the pelvic diaphragm
Coccygeus and levator ani
Coccygeus
O: spine of the ishium
I: sacrum and coccyx
A: supports position of coccyx
Levator ani
the fibers of this muscle extend inferomedial from the anterior pelvis (O) to form a sling around the vagina/prostate, urethra and anus towards the inner surface of the coccyx (I)
A: supports position of coccyx.
sphincters
External urethral sphincter & external anal sphincter
external urethral sphincter
O: ischium and pubic bones
I: central tendon of the perineum
A: constricts the urethra allowing voluntary inhibition of urination
external anal sphincter
wraps around the anus
O: ischium and pubic bones.
I: anterior and posterior insertion. anterior is central tendon of the perineum and posterior is anococcygeal ligament.
A: constricts the anal canal allowing voluntary inhibition of defecation.
Basically these 2 muscles stop urination and feces.
