Muscles of mastication (chewing) Flashcards
Temporalis
On the side of the head infront of the temporal bone
O: temporal fossa of the temporal bone
I: coronoid process and the ramus of the mandible
A: elevates and retracts the mandible
Masseter
goes from the zygomatic arch to the coronoid process of the mandible
O: zygomatic arch
I: angle, ramus, coronoid process of the mandible
A: elevates the mandible
Think of it, it attaches at a point in the mandible where it can lift it up (elevate).

MEDIAL pterygoid
O: pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone: maxilla and palatine bone
I: interior surface of the angle of the mandible.
A: elevates and protracts the mandible: lateral deviation of the mandible (side to side jaw movement)
it runs under the mandible bone coming up to the ear.
LATERAL pterygoid
O: greater wing & pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone
I: condylar process of the mandible & articular capsule of the TMJ
A: depresses and protracts the mandible; lateral deviation of the mandible
Difference between it and medial is this one depresses mandible
Lateral pterygoid is above the medial pterygoid and is horizontal, unlike medial.
