Muscles of the pelvic floor Flashcards
Bulbospongiosus - innervation
Pudendal nerve
Ischiocavernosus - innervation
Pudendal nerve
External anal sphincter muscle - innervation
Pudendal nerve
Superficial transverse perineal muscle - innervation
Pudendal nerve
Muscles of the superficial perineum (4)
Ischiocavernosus
Bulbospongiosus
Superficial tranverse perineal
External anal spincter
Innervation of the pelvic diaphragm
S3 and 4 (keep the shit off the floor)
Where is the puborectalis and what is it’s origin/insertion
It forms part of levator ani
Part of the pelvic diaphragm
It inserts into the pelvic symphysis and runs behind the rectum forming a sling at the junction between the anus and rectum
Where is the pubococcygeus and what is it’s origin and insertion
It forms part of the levator ani
Part of the pelvic diaphragm
Pubic bone lateral to the puborectalis, inserts into the perineal body medially and posteriorly on the coccyx
In men it also attaches to the prostate
Function of pubococcygeus
Contributes to levator ani in support as part of pelvic diaphragm but also specifically contracts during orgasm and helps with bladder control
Where is the iliococcygeus and what is its origin and insertion
Part of levator ani
It attaches to the inner side of the ilium and obturator fascia to insert into the coccyx and the ano-cocygeal raphe (it is the most lateral portion of the levator ani)
Where is the coccygeus and what is it’s origin and insertion
Coccyx to ischial tuberosities
Forms part of the pelvic diaphragm
Which muscles form the pelvic diaphragm?
Puborectalis, pubococcygeus, iliococcygeus = levator ani
Coccygeus
Where is the deep transverse perineal muscle?
It forms part of the urogenital diaphragm, originating from the inferior ramus of the ischium
Deep transverse perineal muscle - innervation
Pudendal nerve
External urethral sphincter - innervation
Deep branch of perineal nerve
