Anterior abdominal wall Flashcards
Insertion of rectus abdominus
From 5th-7th cartilage of ribs and xiphoid process to pubic crest
Lateral boundary of the rectus abdominus
linea semilunaris
Midline boundary of the rectus abdominus
linea alba
What is the blood supply to the rectus abdominus?
Superiorly - superior epigastric artery
Inferiorly - inferior epigastric artery
Also intercostal arteries
What is the innervation of the rectus abdominus?
T7-T11
Where does the inferior epigastric artery enter into the rectus sheath?
At the arcuate line (midway between umbilicus and pubis)
Which artery does the inferior epigastric artery arise from?
The external iliac artery
Which artery does the superior epigastric artery arise from?
The internal thoracic artery
Where do the superior and inferior epigastric arteries anastamose?
At the level of the umbilicus
What are the lateral muscles of the anterior abdominal wall (anterior most to posterior most)
Most anterior = external oblique
Second most anterior = internal oblique
Most posterior = transversus abdominus
What is the direction of external oblique fibres?
Hands in pockets (infero-medially)
What is innervation of the external oblique?
T7-T12
What is the blood supply to the external oblique?
Superiorly - inferior intercostal arteries
Inferiorly : Deep circumflex iliac artery
Which direction do the internal oblique muscle fibres run in?
Supero- medially - crossing arms to cover breasts
What is the innervation of internal oblique muscles
T7- T12
What is the innervation of the transversus abdominus?
T7-T12
What does the anterior leave of the rectus sheath contain above the arcuate line?
Aponeurosis of internal and external oblique
What does the posterior leave of the rectus sheath contain above the arcuate line?
Aponeurosis of internal oblique and transversus abdominus
What does the anterior leave of the rectus sheath contain below the arcuate line?
External oblique
Internal oblique
AND tranversus abdominus
What does the posterior leave of the rectus sheath contain below the arcuate line?
Nothing - there are no aponeuroses after this point, the rectus abdominus is in direct contact the transversalis fascia
What’s the difference between Camper’s and Scarpa’s fascia?
Camper’s fascia = fatty layer (superficial layer)
Scarpa’s fascia = fibrous layer (deep layer)
C comes before S in the alphabet, and fatty foods make happy campers
Which nerves are contained within the rectus sheath?
The first 7 ventral rami of the thoracic nerves
What is the median ligament formed from?
Urachus
What is the medial ligament formed from?
Paired umbilical arteries of the fetus
What do the fetal umbilical arteries form?
Medial ligaments
What does the urachus form?
The median ligament
