Muscles of the Gluteal Region Flashcards
Gluteus Maximus
O: lateral surface of ilium behind posterior gluteal line + dorsal sacroiliac and sacrotuberous ligaments + dorsal surface of the sacrum
I: iliotibial tract + gluteal tuberosity of the femur
A: extension, lateral rotation, abduction, and adduction of the thigh
In: inferior gluteal nerve
Gluteus Medius
O: lateral surface of ilium between anterior and inferior gluteal lines
I: greater trochanter of femur
A: abduction of thigh, medial rotation and flexion and lateral rotation and extension of thigh
In: superior gluteal nerve
Gluteus Minimus
O: lateral surface of ilium between anterior and inferior gluteal lines
I: greater trochanter of femur
A: abduction of thigh, medial rotation and flexion of thigh
In: superior gluteal nerve
Piriformis
O: sacrum (pelvic surface)
I: greater trochanter of femur
A: lateral rotation of thigh, abduction of thigh when thigh is flexed
In: spinal level S1 and S2
Obturator Internus
O: obturator membrane, bone around obturator foramen and internal surface of pelvis
I: medial surface of greater trochanter above the trochanteric fossa of the femur
A: lateral rotation of the thigh, abduction of thigh when thigh is flexed
In: nerve to obturator internus
Superior Gemellus
O: ischial spine
I: superior border of obturator internus tendon
A: lateral rotation of the thigh, abduction of thigh when thigh is flexed
In: nerve to obturator internus
Inferior Gemellus
O: ischial tuberosity
I: inferior border of obturator internus tendon
A: lateral rotation of the thigh, abduction of thigh when thigh is flexed
In: nerve to quadratus femoris
Quadratus Femoris
O: ischial tuberosity
I: posterior surface of femur between greater and lesser trochanters
A: lateral rotation and abduction of the thigh
In: nerve to quadratus femoris
