Muscles of Mastication Flashcards
What are the four muscles of mastication?
Temporalis
Masseter
Lateral Pterygoid
Medial Pterygoid
What is their nerve supply?
Trigeminal Nerve, Mandibular branch (V3)
Function of Temporalis?
Retrusion and elevation of the mandible
Function of Masseter?
Protrusion and elevation of the mandible
Function of Lateral Pterygoid?
Depression and protrusion of mandible
Function of Medial Pterygoid?
Protrusion of mandible
What articulation occurs at the Temporo-Mandibular Joint?
Condylar Process articulates with Mandibular fossa, with articular disk in between
What prevents posterior dislcation of the mandible?
Mastoid Process and the Lateral Ligament
Ligaments of the TMJ?
Lateral
Stylomandibular (attaches at angle)
Sphenomandibular (attaches to lingula/mid mandible)
How does the mouth open?
Condylar process must depress and glide forward to sit under the Articular Tubercle
