Muscles, Joints, And All That Jazz Flashcards
What are bones held together by?
Ligaments
What allows the skeleton to pivot and move (not muscles)
Joints
What is the most common type of joint, and how does it work?
Synovial joint, it is freely movable and has spongy cartilage between the bones as a shock absorber, is well lubricated by synovial membrane for smooth movement
What are the three kinds of synovial joints?
Hinge (movement in one direction), Pivot (rotating or twisting movement), and Ball and Socket joint (greatest movement, bone fits into socket and allows lots of movement).
What are muscles made of?
Interlocking fibres, made from myofibril. Built stronger by protein and exercise (breaking down of muscle and building back up).
What are the three types of muscle cells?
Smooth (eye, intestines), Cardiac (moves blood and maintains blood pressure) , Skeletal (move or stabilise the position if the skeleton)
Generally, in what groups do muscles come in
Pairs, and they work antagonistically (opposite to each other). One contracts while the other relaxes in order to move a part of the body.
Name some major muscles pairs in the human body.
Bicep and Tricep, Pectoral and Shoulder, Quadriceps and Hamstrings, Calf and Shin.
