Heart, Blood, Pulse Flashcards
How many sections are there in the heart, and what are they?
4, Right atrium, Right ventricle, Left atrium, Left ventricle.
What does the left side of the heart do?
Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it to the rest of the body.
What does the right side of the heart do?
Receives deoxygenated blood from the body and pumps it to lungs for oxygenation.
What are the sides of the heart separated by?
The septum, a muscular wall.
What does Pulmonary mean?
To do with the lungs, of the lungs.
Describe the stages deoxygenated goes through to becoming oxygenated blood being pumped around the body.
Vena Cava, Right atrium, Right ventricle, Pulmonary artery, Lungs, Pulmonary vein, Left atrium, Left ventricle, Aorta.
What do all veins (except one) carry and do?
Deoxygenated blood, and they take it back to the lungs. Exception is pulmonary vein.
What do all arteries (except one) carry and do?
Oxygenated blood, and they pump it away from the heart. Exception is the pulmonary artery.
What is considered a healthy blood pressure?
120/80mmHg ( dont ask me what it means cant be stuffed)
Why do we have a pulse?
When the heart pumps, arteries expand and contract (our pulse). Easily found on wrist or neck.
What is a healthy pulse?
Resting, 60-100 beats per minute.
What are the components of blood?
Plasma 55%, Red Blood Cells 44%, Platelets and White blood cells 1%.
What do platelets do?
Clump to clot blood.
What do white blood cells do?
Help fight infection.
What does plasma do?
Transports CO2, hormones and waste.
What do red blood cells do?
Carries oxygen. Has large surface area and no nucleus.
What is significant about the artery itself (not the blood)?
It has thick muscular walls because of the high pressure inside of it.
What is significant about veins (not the blood)?
Thin walls, and valves to stop blood going backwards. Smaller than arteries.
What are capillaries?
Smallest of all blood vessels, very thin walls, embedded in tissues and organs, connects arteries and veins. Is where gas exchange takes place. Carries oxygen and deoxygenated blood, flows away and towards the heart.
What colours are oxygenated and deoxygenated blood?
Oxygenated=Red
Deoxygenated=Blue
