muscles Flashcards
1
Q
how many intercostal spaces are there?
A
11
2
Q
what is each intercostal space filled with?
A
3 layers of muscles and membranes
3
Q
External Intercostal Muscle?
A
- extends from inferior edge of the rib above to superior edge of the rib below
- anteriorly the muscles fibres will be replaced by external intercostal membrane
- raise ribs in forced expiration
- prevent undraping during inspiration
4
Q
Internal Intercostal Muscle?
A
- extends from the lateral edge of costal groove of the rib above to the superior edge of the rib below
- posteriorly muscle fibres will be replaced by internal intercostal membrane
- prevent undraping during inspiration, aids elastic recoil by moving ribs inferiorly in expiration
5
Q
what are the 3 innermost muscles called in the thoracic cage?
A
- innermost intercostal
- transversus thoracis
- subcostalis
6
Q
subcostalis
A
- lies on posterior wall
- lowers the internal surface of the ribs down to the inner surface of 2 to 3 ribs below
7
Q
transversus thoracis?
A
- lies posterior to sternum
- internal aspect of ribs and costal cartilages 3 to 6 to sternum, xiphisternum and costal margin.
8
Q
innermost intercostal?
A
though to act with internal intercostal muscles
- deep surface is covered with end-thoracic fascia
9
Q
where will you find the neuromuscular bundle?
A
in the innermost intercostal layer
10
Q
What muscles will u find on the left ventricular wall?
A
1= trabecula carnae
2= anterior and posterior papillary muscles
