Muscles Flashcards
Where is smooth muscles found?
- walls of blood vessels
- gut
Which type(s) of muscles are controlled voluntarily?
skeletal
- smooth + cardiac- unconsious + involuntary
What are individual muscles made up of?
myofibrils
What is a sarcoplasm?
separate muscle cells fuse tgt into muscle fibres –> share nuclei + cytoplasm
- around circumference of fibre
What is found within the sarcoplasm?
large conc of:
1. mitochondria
2. ER (endoplasmic reticulum)
What is actin?
- thinner
- 2 strands of actin molecules twisted around each other
What is myosin?
- thicker
- long myosin tails
- bulbous heads
What are the light bands called?
I (isotropic) bands
lighter ∵ thick + thin filaments x overlap
What are dark bands called?
A (anisotropic) band
darker ∵ filaments overlap
What is the H zone?
lighter coloured region- centre of A band
What is the Z-line?
centre of each I band
What is a sacromere?
distance betw. 2 Z-lines
What happens to sacromere when muscle contracts?
shortens
What is the advantage of sacromere being parallel to each other?
force is generated in 1 direction
What is a tropomyosin?
- protein
- forms fibrous strand around actin
