Muscle Imbalance and Exercise Flashcards
What is muscle imbalance?
gross asym in muscle size โ> impact in function of MSK system
When does muscle imbalance become pathologic?
when it becomes painful
pain comes with loss of ability to stabilize
movements/maintaing postures become uncontrolled/unstable โ> pain and injury
What are the two components of neuromusculoskeletal system?
neuro component
MSK component
both offer stability
What pathway maintains stability?
motor control pathway
movement: input from peripheral structures โ> processes in CNS โ> CNS creates motor output โ> MSK stability while executing the movement
How do we develop motor patterns?
motor control pathways repeat โ> CNS doesnโt have to reprocess every time
If a muscle becomes too big, what may be a downside?
can negatively impact the function of other muscles
What are the two types of muscles?
Postural - movement, change in posture
Phasic - balance/stability
When does instability occur?
issues with motor pattern (neuro)
issues with muscleโs capacity to execute the motor pattern (MSK)
=> muscle imbalance
What is a facilitated muscle? inhibited?
facilitated โ> overfiring
inhibited โ> underfiring
= both lead to increase risk of injury and pain
How does Lower Crossed Syndrome present?
LBP
SI pain
hip/knee pain
pain with walking and running
What is lower crossed syndrome?
hypertonic postural muscles
hypotonic phasic muscles
How does Upper Crossed Syndrome present?
tension HA
neck/shoulder pain
recurring shoulder injury
pain behind the scapula
What is upper crossed syndrome?
hypertonic postural muscles
hypotonic phasic muscles
How do we diagnose muscle imbalance? treat?
