Muscle Fibres Flashcards
What is a muscle fibre?
A long cylindrical muscle cell that are held together in bundles to make up an individual skeletal muscle
What are the two types of muscle fibres?
Slow twitch (type 1) and fast twitch (type 2)
What are slow twitch fibres?
Fibres that are designed for aerobic exercise and they use oxygen to produce a small amount of tension over a long period of time
What activities are slow twitch fibres best used for?
Endurance events as the fibres are resistant to fatigue
What are the two type of fast twitch fibres?
Fast oxidative glycolytic fibres and fast glycolytic fibres
What are fast twitch fibres?
Fibres that are designed for anaerobic exercise a they produce a large amount of force over a short time
What activities are fast twitch fibres used for?
Performers that take place in power events as the fibres become tired easily
What are fast oxidative glycolytic fibres?
They are anaerobic fibres that are more resistant to fatigue but generate less force
What are fast glycolytic fibres?
They have the greatest anaerobic capacity and therefore generate the largest amount of force
What is aerobic exercise?
Exercise that is performed in the presence of oxygen
What is anaerobic exercise?
Exercise that is performed in the absence of oxygen and can only be sustained for a short period of time due to the build up of lactic acid
