Heart Flashcards
(28 cards)
What does the skeletal muscles require to perform physical activity?
A good supply of energy to supply the energy
What is the primary function of the heart?
To transport oxygen in the blood away from the heart
What is a ‘dual action pump’?
When two separate pumps work simultaneously to pump blood to two different destinations
What does the right side pump?
Deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What does the left side pump?
Oxygenated blood to the rest of the body
How are the two pumps of the heart separated?
By the septum
What do the two pumps consist of?
Two chambers, an atrium and a ventricle
How many chambers does the heart consist of?
Four
What are the left and right atria?
Upper, low pressure chambers that collect and store blood before pumping it below into the left and right ventricles
What size are the muscular walls of the atria?
Relatively thin compared with the ventricles because the blood only has to be pumped directly below
What are the left and right ventricles?
Lower, high pressure chambers that generate force/pressure required to pump blood around the whole body
Why are the muscle walls thicker in the ventricles?
They generate force which requires a greater contraction therefore the muscular walls need to be thicker
Why does the left ventricle have a thicker muscular wall than the right one?
The right ventricle only pumps blood to the lungs whereas the left ventricle pumps blood around the whole body
What are the functions of the one-way valves?
The control the forward direction of the blood flow through the heart and prevent the back flow of blood with in the heart chambers
What separates the atria and the ventricles?
Two atrioventricular valves
What is the right AV valve called?
The tricuspid valve
What is the left AV valve called?
The bicuspid valve
What is the full name of the SL valves?
The semilunar valves
What is the right SL valve called?
The pulmonary valve and exits the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery
What is the left SL valve called?
The aortic valve that exits the left ventricle into the aorta
Why does the heart interact with the blood vessels?
To transport blood to and from the heart
What does the superior/inferior vena cava carry?
Deoxygenated blood from the body to the right atrium
What does the pulmonary artery carry?
Deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs
What does the pulmonary veins carry?
Oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium
